This is UCRWW sampling site U148, looking downstream, standing on the
west side of the creek. This waterway has some good features, like
the trees in this section. It also comes with its own set of problems.
As the new landowner on the east bank, I am looking to see the condition
of this waterway. |

This is looking upstream at the same spot. There is a felled
tree that was not harvested, and a lot of debris has gotten trapped in
the branches and quite a pile has formed. What has laid across the
creek has formed a mound and a dam, changing the course of the flow. On
the far side, the bank is severely eroding, maybe due to the change in
the direction of flow and the higher volume of water that accumulates here.
There is a lot of bank left to erode further, it makes a sheer crumbly
wall about 3 feet high with grass on top but few plants holding the side. |
| Today the water is gushing over the dam that has formed. |

Here is a close-up of the slipping bank. |
This is looking back on the same location, from the east side.
I am Kaye. As the landowner I can do things to this creek.
I think the way to make this situation better (and not worse) is to remove
the log jam and restore the direction of flow that existed prior. I
am thinking boots, shovel, wheelbarrow and chainsaw is the way to go.
But there are other spots on this creek to check out, and this might not
yet be the biggest emergency.
