Otherworld Food Co-op is doing a local economy
experiment, returning the value of our volume discount from our largest
supplier in the form of local currency. United Natural Foods gives us a
volume discount on all non-sale items, in an amount determined by the average
volume of our order. Our
volume discount is now set at 13 percent, and this amount is figured on
each invoice by the FoodLink program, and this amount of "change" is returned
to each member in the form of local currency. The currency notes, called
Frog Dollars because of frog pictures on the coupon, can be redeemed by
the Producer as cash value on their next Otherworld Co-op order. The faces
on the Dollars are of local providers. These notes show Robin Verson
of Hill and Hollow CSA, Evelyn Yater who supplies eggs from the chickens
she keeps, and Todd Elliott of Sylvanus Farm CSA.
The first frog dollar sale ever:
Chris Korrow accepts 12 frogs in exchange for
a bottle of tincture.
